Happy Silly Commercialized Day!

Woo! My maps from Adventure Cycling came in the mail a few days ago. It's along the "North Lakes Route" which goes from Minneapolis, MN through Wisconsin to Escanaba, MI in the Upper Peninsula. It then turns south and goes halfway down the state. From there, you can catch a ferry across Lake Michigan and go along an alternate route back to Minneapolis. There's also a spur that goes south from where you'd catch the ferry to Indiana but I think I'll skip that part.

I really want to see Mackinaw City, a small tourist town in the Upper Peninsula. Supposedly, no cars are allowed into the town itself and it's filled with historic sites like Fort Mackinac and Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse. I'm a total geek when it comes to old buildings and historic sites.

The ferry crossing looks interesting too. There's two carferries that cross Lake Michigan one or two times a day. It's not too expensive at $60 per passenger. (I wouldn't cross if I were driving though. It adds another $50 and I'd just drive through Chicago.) I'm mostly interested because I've never been on a boat that big. From the website, those ferries look almost like miniature cruise ships. Snack bars, a gift shop, a tv lounge, etc.

In other words, I'm so going in June. Most campgrounds in this area are only open from May to October and it'll give me time to recover from my winter sloth. :-p Winter cycling scares the crap out of me and we keep getting 30 below wind chills so I refuse to go walking.

Before I go, I think I'll find a class in basic bicycle repairs. I know how to change a tire but you're constantly hearing about people who have their spokes break. Would be nice to know how to fix that myself, especially in the middle of nowhere.

Hope this doesn't turn out like the last bicycle tour. :D

COOL! It sounds like a GREAT adventure! I think that planning for these kind of trips is half the fun. I start thinking about what I need, what's light enough and small enough to be worth carrying on a bike, etc.
Will you be riding with a group? That would be safer and more fun.
Keep us posted on your plans as they develop. I'll want to see pictures after you get back. What fun!

Ferd & Titania (since I'm too lazy to split it in two :D) - Yup, I'll definitely be taking pics.

I think I'm gonna solo it. It probably would be safer to go with others but I really like the freedom of soloing. Plus, I hate it when women decide to go with others simply because they fear it's unsafe.

Ooh, yeah, I'll have to think about a packing list.

Thanks, Titania!

To plan ahead gives you things to look forward to, if you're in that mindset. Cycling trips are amazing.

Liara - Yup, I've learned that I always miss an attraction or two if I don't research places I'm going beforehand.
