Blogger's Block

The past few days, I've been struggling to come up with something to blog about. I'd fidget and fuss and stare at a blank page in MS Works. Eventually, I'd give up and play a few mindless games of Slingo or some Pogo game. Then, I'd return to the blank page and try to come up with something to say. It wouldn't work. I flipped through a few websites that had journaling prompts. Again, it didn't really work. I came up with a few fiction ideas but I'm terrible when it comes to actually finishing a short story so I rarely bother trying to write fiction anymore.

The minute I laid down though, a million half-formed potential blog entries popped up. It was then that I realized I can't really come up with an idea in front of the computer. Maybe it's the state of mind I get into when I sit here. My internet habits seem to be the same as my television habits. Information flows into my brain and I don't really think about it. I may consider what the writer is saying but I don't dwell on the subject for more than a few seconds. Every somewhat decent blog entry that I've written occurred to me while I was laying in bed waiting to fall asleep, in the grocery store line, or wandering around town.

Maybe going back to pen and paper and transcribing it here would be a good idea. Watch me forget all those ideas by tomorrow.

I experience the same thing. I guess ya can't force it! I have started jotting down the ideas as they come or else I'll forget them. I have a horrible memory for certain things!

Good luck!

There is something about being in bed that brings out the best in ideas. I had read somewhere that you should always keep a notepad and pen by your bedside for just this reason but it made no mention of how to protect your most sensitive areas when you suddenly sit bolt upright at 2:45AM and flick the light on disturbing your other half in the process and encouraging her to lash out with her knee as punishment.

Part of it is that you're letting your mind relax when you're in bed. I have the same thing happen a lot too. It's definitely a good idea to walk away from the screen when you feel blocked. Have you ever tried poetry? (he says with obvious bias)

happy birthday (whispered lowly so the rest of the internet can't hear) :)

I have found myself blocked in the exact same way. I'm not sure why it happens (internal pressure or expectation?) but I find that when I switch back and forth, it helps. Also, depriving myself for awhile is good too (though not good if you want to satisfy a readership). And maybe that's it. Writing for other people can sometimes stop me from writing for myself.

I've been experiencing writer's block lately too. I can't seem to write a blog entry for anything right now.

Jillian - Yeah, I'm doing the "jotting down ideas" thing now too. I'm probably going to look at it a week from now and think, 'What the hell was I babbling about?!?'

Mark - LOL!

Francis - I've tried it a few times. Then grimaced, torn the paper to shreds, and went back to prose. I like poetry but I'm never happy with mine.

Thanks! :)

Goldmourn - Yeah, I think it's perfectionism that gets to me. I realize it's going on the internet and will be judged.

Bpd - Sometimes, prompts or freewriting works for me. Not lately though. :-/

I get my best ideas for writing when I'm driving...not exactly the best time to jot a few notes in my journal!

I keep a little notebook with me just for that, because I can't ever just sit down at the computer and start typing.

Roxiticus - We need to tell that to the morons who text while driving. :-/

I can so see you with one of those little recorders saying, "Note to self..."

Ferd - lol If I ever do a podcast, that's the first thing I'm saying.
