Home

The street my childhood home was on isn't very well-known to most of the city's residents. It only stretches for ten city blocks and, out of those ten, eight are populated by industrial buildings. Whenever you took a taxi home, you'd have to give the driver directions. "It's between Minnehaha and Hiawatha," we'd say and then he'd understand. Even the block I lived on was populated with a few light industrial buildings and a McDonald's. The largest building on the block, though, was the grain silo at the other end of the street. I don't know how tall it is exactly. Five stories? Six? I'm a terrible judge of distance. It could be ten for all I know. A few people visiting our house for the first time would stare up at it and ask, "Aren't you frightened?" My mother would nod and say something along the lines of, "Yes, somebody drops one spark at the wrong time and the whole thing will blow." I never really thought about it long enough to be frightened. The silo was just there.

The house itself is gone now. A real estate developer bought the plot from my parents, bulldozed the house, and converted the land into townhouses a few years ago. Some people might mourn their childhood home being destroyed but the house was falling apart by then. The plumbing was shot causing the living room ceiling to leak when you overfilled the bathtub. Fifty years of occasional light flooding had caused the basement walls and foundation to warp and chip away. The kitchen and bathroom appliances were ancient. Its only redeeming traits were a large yard and hardwood floors. If I were in my parents' shoes, I would have sold the house a lot faster than they did.

I'm pretty unsentimental about such things too. I still occasionally see the house where I spent most of my youth in MD, as my brother lives next door to it. But the street is now over-developed and the woodlands that made it special are completely gone, so its not the same.

That picture looks like a place where crazies are locked up. A place where the walls are brown with excrement and the hallways echo with cries of MADNESS!

Call me sentimentally crazy, but I felt sad for the razing of your old home. LOL I like grain silos cause they usually mean a railroad is near. Looks like something I would like to model on my model railroad some day. Take care! Berryvox!

I really like the explorations of your city. I'm sure I would discover a lot of cool details if I took the time around my own town.
I noticed you redid your site a little. It looks nice! I like it! I'm glad you didn't get rid of your Oscar Wilde comment. It's what caught my eye in the first place.
Peace!

Francis - Yeah, my memories of the house are still pretty sharp and I don't know if I would've liked to see it fall apart even more.

Jillian - lol

Andrew - There is a freight line right next to it. You just gave me an idea for my next photos!

Ferd - I figured taking pictures around the city would be good practice for June. :) And the Oscar Wilde quote is so staying. I found it when I was stumbling through websites and loved it.

I agree that it was best to get out of that area. Those silos were not very good scenery anyway.

Pretty bird in the prior post.
Hope all is well your way and Spring has sprung. :o)

Matt - Morning! (Hee, now that it's 10pm)

Titania - Aww, I actually find a strange beauty in those old, looming buildings. :)
