My mother: 'What are you going to do if a bear attacks you?'

Me: 'Die'

I would drop to the ground, a quivering ball of fear. :o)

I'm guessing your mom wasn't okay with that answer.

She's going to miss you and worry about you. I can tell just by that question.

I just realized I am also a little worried about you. Hmm. What do you make of that?

Just bring along a nice pick-a-nick basket. From my childhood tv watching I learned bears can be distracted by those.

Titania - Yeah, I'd actually just freeze in fear with a 'deer in the headlights' look.

Ferd - Hehe, yeah. Her response was "Well, I don't want you to die!"

I think it's a normal reaction. There is some danger in bicycle touring, especially solo. I could get a flooded tent again. I could get hit by a car (though that could happen in everyday life too). If I weren't 90% certain that I'll be fine, I wouldn't do it.

Francis - There ya go! Maybe if I promise to prevent forest fires, it'll let me go!

In 2004 I yelled at and fought with my employers to get enough time off to take a road trip across the country. I remember how excited I was the night before I left, and how awesome it was when I passed the point where I was farther away from home than I had ever been before, and that first breath-taking moment of being on the prairies, and all else I had never seen before. I think it's really cool that you are about to experience a similar journey, and on a bicycle! That makes it even cooler!

Bears?? They're nothing! Watch out for the PUGS!! lol

I think if my mother could have afforded to she would have had people following me all the way to British Columbia ... like emergency crews and tow trucks and SWAT teams. Mothers are funny like that I guess.

Anyway ... Bon Voyage!! :)

Victor - Oh, I know what you mean by seeing all the things you haven't before. I road-tripped to Las Vegas in 2000 and gasped the first time I saw the desert. That was the most stunning landscape I've ever seen.

Ack, farm dogs. I've heard bicycle tourists have major problems with them. :-/

And about the mothers, it could be worse. They could be saying, 'Finally!'

Thanks! :)
