Summer 2008 Bicycle Tour - June 28 & 29

June 28, 2008 - 46 miles

The sand dunes along the north shore of Lake Michigan are stunningly beautiful. Seagulls gather along the shore and a few scattered tourists and locals wander around picnicking, swimming, or just relaxing. Not a very exciting day but the scenery was lovely and I can see why US Highway 2 is promoted as a scenic route. Spent the night in Naubinway.

June 29, 2008 - 47 miles

Gah! Part of the highway was shut down because of construction and I had to take a detour. That wouldn't be a terrible thing but the detour was crowded with traffic and it was along a teeny two-lane road with no shoulder. I ended up walking over most of it. Seeing the abandoned cabins along the route was interesting though.

Once that was over, I stopped by a souvenir shop and bought a hoodie. Hope it helps with the chilly mornings! (Added later: Because irony loves me, it started getting warmer at this point. But, on the bright side, I wanted more hoodies for autumn, spring, and winter and it's much cuter than anything I'm likely to find at Target or Marshall's. So it all works out.)

Got to the town of St. Ignace and spent the night in a motel near the docks. This is definitely a tourist town. You can't walk a block without stumbling into a souvenir stand or hotel. That's fine with me. I love tourist towns and I get to wander around Mackinac Island tomorrow.

Mackinac Bridge connects Michigan's Upper and Lower Peninsulas.

Sadly, the World Famous Mystery Spot will have to remain a mystery because... I just didn't care that much. Even if it is 'fun fun fun'.

"World Famous" ?? I must not be getting around much because I've never heard of it! *lol*

I'm enjoying reading about your bicycle tour! Looking forward to the next installment.

Can't wait for Mackinac Island post(s) - that's somewhere I've always wanted to visit!

Love your pics, esp. the last one, what on earth could be so mysterious and fun, and warrant such a sign?
