Going Vegan

Ever since I was a teenager, I've meant to become vegetarian. I'd make half-hearted attempts every couple of years but, within a week, I'd give in to the lure of a cheap double cheeseburger. In early February, I started my last attempt. I don't know why it worked but the switch was easy this time. And, this time, I went full vegan; no meat, no eggs, and no dairy.

Because I had to eliminate some foods from my diet, I had to try out a few things I normally wouldn't eat. I quickly discovered that the people who make fun of rice cakes and soy burgers have no idea what they're talking about. Partially. It depends on what brand you buy. I can't remember the brand name but I picked up some rice cakes from the health foods section. They were one of the blandest foods I've ever eaten. On the other hand, Quaker has rice cakes that come in different flavors like peanut butter, chocolate chip, and apple cinnamon. I actually prefer those over most cookies. I had similar experiences with soy burgers. Boca's original vegan meatless burgers are great. Gardenburger, on the other hand, has somehow recreated the taste of vomit with their Veggie Medley burgers.

I didn't go vegan for health or weight loss reasons. It took me by surprise when I lost 10 pounds and three inches off my waist.

(Day 3...is kinda boring.)

Congrats on going vegan! I found that the first 2 months or so were very difficult, as I had to break a lot of bad habits I'd built up. I found that talking to other vegans made life easier for me. So, now you can see me chatting more with people on RawPeople.

Anon - Thanks! The vegan websites were really helpful to me. I wouldn't have known about possible B12 deficiencies unless I had read up on it. Or the plant-based calcium sources.

Good for you. My oldest daughter has been vegan for years. We used to worry about the overall balance of her diet, but like you, she reads and makes sure she's getting what he needs.

It makes eating out a little difficult but most places around here have a vegan option or appetizer.
