April 20, 2010 - The Crochet Attempt

Occasionally, I get an inkling to learn crochet. I don't want to make afghans or sweaters or anything vaguely useful. (Though after looking at some patterns for bags, I'm kinda drooling over those.) No, it was when I first saw amigurumi, crocheted toys and dolls, that I decided I must learn eventually.

Scarf attempt #3
So, a couple of weeks ago, I ordered a 'learn to crochet' book from Amazon. When I got it, I sat down and figured out a few stitches. I came up with a very simple pattern for a scarf. 3 rows of single crochet followed by 2 rows of double crochet. Then, 1 row of triple crochet. And repeat the 2 rows of double and 1 row of triple crochet until the scarf was long enough.

Attempt #1: I get about 7 rows in when I realize the width is strangely increasing. I refer to the book and realize I'm not skipping a stitch when double or triple crocheting. Oops. I unravel it and start over.

Attempt #2: I get about 10 rows in before I realize the width is strangely decreasing. I count the stitches. 19 towards the bottom. 15 near the top. Oops. I unravel and start over.

Attempt #3: I get about 5 rows in before I notice a row is wider than it's supposed to be. I unravel part of it and continue from there.

Wow! I'm sure you'll come up with a very cute one! I aint good in any of these when it comes to stitching though... so I'm envious of you... =)

Good for you for wanting to learn something, and then actually doing it! Cool!
