Summer 2011 Bicycle Tour

I had two options for this summer's bicycle tour. The one I really wanted to do was Adventure Cycling's Great Rivers route and a little bit of the Northern Tier which would take me from Louisiana to Minnesota along the Mississippi River.* But there's a few reasons I'm deciding against it for now.

1. I really don't have the cash to pull that off. About 2/3 of the way through, I'd be dumpster-diving for food and bathing in the Mississippi. Sounds unpleasant.
2. I don't want to camp in Louisiana. Maybe I've watched "Billy the Exterminator" one too many times. I can deal with the bears and ticks up here. Venomous snakes and leg-chomping alligators terrify me.
3. I don't want to go both ways along the same route. There's no nearby route where I could make a loop on my bicycle. Soooo, I'd have to take a plane and ship my bicycle to Baton Rouge or another nearby town. That means my bicycle has to be disassembled and reassembled. I don't want my bicycle in itty-bitty parts.

*Rambling sidenote: And, now you know why I thought "Big River" by Johnny Cash was fantastic. Because I'm usually not a country music fan. Though Johnny Cash is pretty bad-ass.

So, instead, I'll do the route below in July. Minneapolis, MN-Fargo, ND-Grand Rapids, MN-Minneapolis, MN. I already have the maps from Adventure Cycling Association. It's approximately 700-750 miles round-trip. But, we'll add another 50 miles for the times when I go 2 miles down a road and think, 'Wait...did I miss a turn?!?'

Ferd - Yup, it's the only reason I bought the netbook. :)

LBJ - Ooooh, I want a folding bike. It'd totally kill my worries about shipping a bike on a plane. Hope you have a great trip. :)
