Nice Ride MN Bikes

A Nice Ride bike rack in downtown Minneapolis

Between April and November, Minneapolis and St. Paul have a neat bicycle rental system called Nice Ride MN. Basically, you buy a subscription for 24 hours, 30 days, or the whole season. Numerous bike racks are set up around the two cities. Whenever you want to use a bike, you enter the unlocking code or key that Nice Ride gives you and you can ride it for up to 30 minutes. After 30 minutes, they start charging you trip fees. But, you can reset that 30-minute timer by returning your current bike to a rack and getting a new one.

If they had racks closer to where I live, I'd absolutely get a season pass. No worries about bike theft or flats!

Bad part: You do need a credit or debit card to buy a subscription. And I've heard that they hold something like $200 for a number of days if you use a debit card.

Pretty cool idea! I've never heard of anything like it! It must have taken a LOT of time, effort and commitment to a healthy lifestyle to get that done!

The city of Minneapolis tried to do a similar program where the bikes were free to use but people kept stealing them. So, yeah, this is at least Try #2. The Twin Cities ARE great about promoting alternatives to the car.

I've heard of bike share programs and think it's wonderful. If only pollution wasn't so bad here, and the heat too! This would be a cool way to go to work or school

Vera - I actually like biking during hot weather. The wind that's created actually makes it much cooler than walking. No experience with biking through air pollution though!
