This is a wildly long entry and you certainly don't have to read it if you don't want to.
Awhile ago, I came across a challenge where people try to drink a gallon of water a day for 30 days. I attempted the challenge once but I didn't get very far because tracking how much I drank was tedious.
Recently though I came across a YouTube video about someone doing the same challenge. Underneath was a comment (from somebody whose username I can't remember) about how they just split the challenge into 8 16 ounce bottles a day. I thought, 'That's the way to do it! Guzzle one bottle an hour and you've done it.' And so now I'm currently on Day 16 of the challenge.
Supposedly there are a number of health benefits to doing this challenge, clearer skin, dark undereye circles disappearing, weight loss, etc. While all of those things would be nice, my main goal was to lessen my Diet Coke addiction. I drink 8+ cans of the stuff on a light day. If I was guzzling a 16 oz bottle of water once an hour though, there wouldn't be much room for soda. And it's worked. I still drink a few to chase back the caffeine headaches but I've definitely slowed down on the soda.
And even though tracking the water was an issue my first time doing the challenge, I've actually been great about tracking how much I drink this time. At first, my entries were pretty wordy but as I've gotten more accustomed to the change, I simply write down the times I drink a bottle.
Here are a few of my entries for those interested: This is the condensed version. I'm sure you don't want to read long days of "9am: bottle #1, noon: bottle #3, etc."
12:15 AM: I've decided to do a 30 day challenge. For the next 30 days, I will drink a gallon or more of water each day. If I drink 8 - 16 ounce bottles, that will be one gallon or 128 ounces. I have just guzzled down my first bottle.
1:20AM: I just downed a three egg omelet and my second bottle of water. I had a bit of heartburn while making the omelet. I'm not sure if that is related to the increased water intake or the vegan 'beer brat' I had late last night.
1PM: I wake up. I woke up a couple of times throughout the night to go to the bathroom. I absolutely expected that though. I also guzzled my third bottle.
2:30, 3:30, & 4PM: Bottles 4, 5, and 6. I'm going to the bathroom soooo much.
9:30: I've finished the final two bottles and I've decided that I'm done until midnight.
2:30AM: I've already drank two and I'm starting my third bottle.
3AM: Third bottle down and I'm going to sleep.
1PM: I wake up. (Yes I have a strange sleep schedule.)
By 11PM, I've downed 7 bottles. I've had a mild headache all day. At first I wondered if drinking so much water was the cause of the headache but I think it's actually caffeine withdrawal.
2AM: My first bottle. I've been procrastinating on it. Should I just guzzle the next one as quickly as I can instead of sipping it slowly?
By 11:30PM, I've finished my gallon. I've also noticed that my lips which are often dry and chapped look and feel much better than they normally are.
I actually drank 9 bottles instead of 8 today.
Drank them all. I want a Diet Coke so badly. I've had a few cans but I would love another. I suspect my desire is more psychological than physical.
I stop writing notes to myself and just note the times I drank a bottle.
I've noticed something strange, a benefit I really didn't expect. I think my sense of taste is improving. I quit smoking many, many years ago and one of the benefits to quitting was supposed to be regaining your sense of taste. I never experienced that then. But now because I'm not constantly sipping a can of Diet Coke, the taste of the soda isn't overpowering my tastebuds. Cream cheese and peanut butter are even more amazing than before. Also I haven't had a problem with heartburn since I last mentioned it.
That's it for now. I'll update when I hit Day 30 of the challenge and see if I notice any other benefits or drawbacks.
